  • Great Use for Leftover Wonton Wrappers: Often, we buy a pack of wonton wrappers for one recipe and have some leftover. This recipe provides a delicious and creative solution, ensuring no wrapper goes to waste.

Mastering the Crispy Wonton Cup: A Simple Technique

The secret to these delightful cups lies in how we prepare the wonton wrappers. It’s a simple technique that yields perfectly crispy, golden-brown shells ready to be filled with our zesty buffalo shrimp. Instead of frying, we bake them, which is not only healthier but also less messy and more consistent. The key is to create a sturdy, star-shaped cup that can hold its generous filling without crumbling. The light brush of olive oil before baking ensures they become wonderfully crisp and golden, transforming an ordinary wrapper into an extraordinary edible bowl.

Ingredients You’ll Need for Flavorful Shrimp Wonton Cups

For this recipe, efficiency is key. Having all your ingredients prepped and ready will allow you to assemble these tasty bites in no time. Here’s what you’ll need to create 12 exquisite buffalo shrimp wonton cups:

  • 1 box (approximately 300g-400g) of High Liner Oven Crunch Buffalo Shrimp
  • 24 square wonton wrappers
  • 1 tablespoon high-quality olive oil
  • ¼ cup shredded purple cabbage, for color and crunch
  • ¼ cup shredded green cabbage, for additional texture
  • 1 large carrot, finely shredded
  • 1-2 large Romaine lettuce leaves, chopped into small pieces
  • ¼ cup creamy Ranch dressing
  • Optional: Hot sauce for an extra kick, fresh chives or cilantro for garnish

Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Buffalo Shrimp Wonton Delights

Follow these straightforward steps to create your own batch of spicy, crispy, and utterly delicious buffalo shrimp wonton cups:

  1. Prepare Your Wonton Cups: Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly spray a standard 12-count muffin tin with cooking spray. For each muffin cavity, place two wonton wrappers. Position the first wrapper flat, then place the second wrapper slightly sideways on top of the first, creating a “star” shape. This layering technique provides extra stability and a beautiful presentation. Dip a pastry brush into the olive oil and lightly coat the surface of each wonton wrapper stack. This helps them crisp up beautifully and achieve a golden hue.
  2. Bake the Wonton Cups: Carefully transfer the muffin tin to the preheated oven. Bake the wonton wrappers for about 6-7 minutes, or until they are lightly browned and visibly crispy. Keep a close eye on them, as wonton wrappers can brown quickly. Once baked, remove the muffin tin from the oven and allow the cups to cool slightly. While they cool, increase your oven temperature to 425°F (220°C).
  3. Cook the Buffalo Shrimp: On a separate baking sheet, arrange the High Liner Oven Crunch Buffalo Shrimp in a single, even layer. Once the oven reaches 425°F, place the baking sheet with the shrimp into the oven. Bake for 12-14 minutes, making sure to turn the shrimp halfway through the cooking time to ensure even crispiness and heating. The shrimp should be thoroughly cooked and deliciously crispy.

  5. Prepare the Fresh Slaw: While the shrimp are baking, combine the shredded purple cabbage, green cabbage, shredded carrot, and chopped Romaine lettuce in a medium-sized salad bowl. Toss these ingredients gently to ensure they are well mixed. This vibrant slaw adds a refreshing crunch and balances the heat of the buffalo shrimp.

  7. Assemble and Serve: Once the wonton cups have cooled slightly and the buffalo shrimp are perfectly cooked, it’s time for assembly. Place a few tablespoons (about 2-3) of the fresh cabbage and carrot mixture into each cooled wonton cup. Next, top each cup with 1-2 pieces of the warm, crispy buffalo shrimp. Finish with a generous drizzle of creamy Ranch dressing. The cool, tangy Ranch dressing beautifully complements the spicy buffalo flavor of the shrimp. For those who crave even more heat, consider serving these appetizers with a small bottle of your favorite hot sauce on the side for guests to add to their liking. Serve immediately to enjoy them at their crispiest best!

Tips for Serving and Storing Your Wonton Cups

For optimal enjoyment, these buffalo shrimp wonton cups are definitely best served fresh and warm, right out of the oven. The crispy wonton shells and hot, spicy shrimp create a delightful contrast that is simply irresistible. If you’re serving them at a party or gathering, they’ll maintain their quality and crispiness for a good few hours at room temperature. However, for longer storage, you can keep them in the refrigerator.

While refrigeration might cause the wonton wrappers to soften slightly, they will still be incredibly flavorful. I’ve personally found that a quick zap in the microwave for 10-12 seconds (even with the Ranch dressing on!) brings them back to a satisfying warmth, though the crispness won’t be quite the same as fresh. For best results, store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days. Alternatively, to maximize freshness and crispness for future servings, you can store the components independently: keep the baked wonton cups in an airtight container at room temperature, and store the cooked buffalo shrimp and fresh slaw mixture separately in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to enjoy them again, simply re-crisp the wonton cups and shrimp in the oven, assemble, and add fresh Ranch dressing.

These buffalo shrimp wonton cups are more than just an appetizer; they’re a crowd-pleasing culinary experience. They deliver on all fronts: spicy, crispy, and bursting with incredible flavor. They are guaranteed to be a hit at your next gathering or a fantastic quick snack when a craving for something zesty hits. Give them a try – you won’t be disappointed!

Enjoy every delightful bite!
