Drawing inspiration from our highly popular 3-ingredient cheesy tortellini bake, we set out to create another winner – and thus, this spectacular Sausage Ravioli Bake was born! Pasta, in any form, is always a crowd-pleaser, but there's something uniquely special about tender, pillowy ravioli. And since ground sausage consistently earns rave reviews from even the pickiest eaters, it was a natural fit to make it the star of this wholesome, bubbly casserole.

It's an irresistible combination of cheesy, saucy goodness that delivers incredible flavor without any complicated steps. With just a handful of readily available ingredients, you'll be able to whip up a comforting meal that feels gourmet but is surprisingly simple to assemble.

Essential Ingredients for Your Perfect Sausage Ravioli Bake
True to our promise of simplicity, the ingredient list for this easy dinner is refreshingly short and sweet. You likely have many of these staples in your pantry already, making this a perfect last-minute meal idea:
- Olive Oil: A good quality olive oil forms the base for sautéing our aromatics, adding a subtle richness.
- Yellow Onion: Diced finely, the yellow onion will caramelize slightly, providing a sweet and savory depth to the sausage mixture.
- Garlic: Freshly minced garlic is essential for that unmistakable aromatic kick that elevates any Italian-inspired dish.
- Ground Sausage: We recommend a pound of ground pork sausage. For a delightful kick, consider spicy Italian chorizo; otherwise, a mild Italian sausage or even plain ground pork works beautifully, especially if serving children.
- Dried Oregano: This classic herb infuses the dish with authentic Mediterranean flavor, complementing the tomato sauce and sausage.
- Salt: To season the sausage mixture and bring out all the delicious flavors. Adjust to your preference.
- Pasta Sauce: A jar of your favorite marinara or tomato pasta sauce provides the luscious foundation for this bake. Marinara is highly recommended for its balanced flavor profile, but any quality tomato sauce will do the trick. We’ve found that Rao's Marinara Sauce from Costco is a fantastic choice for its rich taste.
- Mozzarella Cheese: Shredded mozzarella provides that classic gooey, melty texture and mild, creamy flavor that makes any pasta bake irresistible.
- Cheese Ravioli: The star of the show! One package (around 600 grams) of cheese-filled ravioli is ideal. While you can certainly experiment with other fillings, a cheese ravioli offers versatility and pairs wonderfully with the sausage. Avoid beef-filled ravioli to prevent conflicting flavors with the ground sausage.
- Parmesan Cheese: Grated Parmesan cheese adds a sharp, salty finish and a beautiful golden crust when baked, completing the flavor profile.
When selecting your ingredients, don't be afraid to customize! For the sausage, if you're a fan of heat, a spicy Italian sausage or even chorizo will add an exciting dimension. For a milder flavor suitable for younger palates, opt for a sweet Italian sausage or simply use plain ground pork and add your own seasonings. The beauty of this recipe lies in its adaptability.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Make This Easy Ravioli Bake
This delightful dinner is incredibly straightforward to prepare, taking approximately one hour from start to finish. To ensure a smooth cooking experience, I highly recommend having all your ingredients prepped and ready before you begin – you can even chop your onion and mince your garlic the night before to save time!
- Prepare the Oven and Sauté the Aromatics: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly spray an 11 x 7-inch baking dish with nonstick spray and set it aside. In a large, oven-safe pan or skillet (if not oven-safe, you'll transfer the mixture later), heat one tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat on your stovetop. Add the diced yellow onion and sauté for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it becomes soft and translucent. This step is crucial for building a flavorful base.
- Brown the Sausage and Combine with Sauce: Once the onion is softened, add the minced garlic to the pan and cook for another minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it. Then, add the ground pork sausage, dried oregano, and salt. Cook the sausage, breaking it up with a large wooden spoon as it browns, for about 6-7 minutes, until it's entirely cooked through and no pink remains. Drain any excess grease from the pan to prevent the casserole from becoming oily. Pour the entire jar of pasta sauce into the cooked sausage mixture and stir well to combine all the flavors. Remove the pan from the heat.
- Assemble the Layers: Now it's time to build your delicious casserole! Spread half of the savory sausage and sauce mixture evenly over the bottom of your prepared baking pan. This forms the flavorful base for your ravioli. Next, sprinkle 1 cup of the shredded mozzarella cheese generously over the sausage mixture. This layer of cheese will become wonderfully gooey and help the layers adhere. Carefully arrange half of the fresh ravioli from the package on top of the mozzarella cheese. Don't worry if the ravioli don't perfectly touch; they will expand and soften as they bake.
- Repeat and Top with Cheese: Repeat the layering process one more time: spread the remaining half of the sausage mixture, then sprinkle another generous cup of shredded mozzarella cheese. Top this with the remaining half of the ravioli. Finish the casserole with an extra sprinkle of mozzarella cheese, followed by the grated Parmesan cheese over the very top. This final cheese layer will create a beautiful golden-brown crust.
- Cover and Bake to Perfection: Take a large piece of aluminum foil and spray one side with nonstick spray. Place the sprayed side of the foil over the casserole dish, tightly pinching the edges around the dish to seal it completely. This creates a steamy environment that allows the ravioli to cook perfectly without boiling beforehand. Bake the covered casserole in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbling around the edges.
- Broil for a Golden Crust and Rest: Carefully remove the foil from the top of the dish. Turn your oven to the broil setting. Place the casserole back under the broiler for an additional 1-2 minutes, watching it very closely, until the top is golden brown and bubbly. This step adds a beautiful color and irresistible texture to your cheese topping. Once done, remove the casserole dish from the oven and place it on a heat-safe counter to cool for about 10 minutes before serving. This resting period allows the layers to set and makes for easier, cleaner serving.

The Magic of No-Boil Ravioli: No Pre-Cooking Required!
One of the most appealing aspects of this Sausage Ravioli Bake, and indeed a significant time-saver, is that you absolutely do NOT have to boil the ravioli before baking it! This convenience factor is a huge win for busy home cooks and truly sets this dish apart.
The secret lies in the steam generated within the foil-covered casserole dish. As the bake heats up in the oven, the moisture from the pasta sauce and the sealed environment created by the foil work together to perfectly soften the raw ravioli. The pasta gently cooks in the flavorful sauce, absorbing all the wonderful savory notes, resulting in tender, perfectly cooked ravioli without the extra pot, extra water, or extra time. This "no-boil" method streamlines the cooking process, allowing you to go from pantry to plate faster and with fewer dishes to wash. It's truly the beauty of a well-designed casserole!
Making Ahead and Freezing: Prep for Convenience
Life gets busy, and having delicious, ready-to-bake meals on hand is a game-changer. This Sausage Ravioli Bake is wonderfully adaptable for make-ahead preparation and even freezing, ensuring you have a comforting meal ready whenever you need it!
Make-Ahead Options:
- Partial Prep: You can cook the sausage, onions, and garlic, then stir in the tomato sauce. Let this mixture cool completely before storing it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. When you're ready to bake, simply assemble the layers with the ravioli and cheese, then proceed with the baking instructions.
- Full Assembly (Refrigerated): For maximum convenience, fully assemble the entire casserole, layering all the ingredients in your baking dish. Cover it tightly with plastic wrap and then foil, and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. When baking a chilled, assembled casserole, you'll need to increase the baking time. Bake it, still covered with foil, for approximately 45-50 minutes, or until it's heated through and bubbling, before removing the foil and broiling for that golden crust.
Freezing Instructions:
This casserole freezes beautifully, making it perfect for meal prepping or unexpected company.
- Baked and Frozen: If you want to have a fully cooked meal ready to reheat, bake the entire dish according to the instructions. Allow it to cool completely to room temperature. Once cooled, cover the casserole tightly with multiple layers of aluminum foil or transfer individual portions to freezer-safe containers. Label with the date and freeze for up to 2 months.
- To Reheat from Frozen (Baked): Thaw the frozen casserole overnight in the refrigerator. Once thawed, bake (covered) at 350°F (175°C) for approximately 45-60 minutes, or until thoroughly heated and bubbling. Remove foil and broil for a few minutes if desired for a crispy top.
- Unbaked and Frozen: You can also assemble the casserole without baking it, cover it very tightly with plastic wrap and foil, and freeze for up to 2 months.
- To Bake from Frozen (Unbaked): Thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Then bake as per the original instructions, adding about 15-20 minutes to the covered baking time to ensure it cooks through from a chilled state.

Perfect Pairings: What to Serve with This Easy Ravioli Bake
This Sausage Ravioli Bake is a hearty and satisfying meal on its own, but it truly shines when paired with a fresh, crisp side. I often opt for simple mixed vegetables (even frozen ones work great for convenience!), but if you're looking to elevate your meal, here are some fantastic side dishes that complement this rich pasta bake beautifully:
- 3-Ingredient Bread: A simple, crusty bread is perfect for soaking up any extra sauce. Its fresh-baked aroma and soft interior make it an ideal companion.
- Sautéed Shredded Brussels Sprouts: The slight bitterness and earthy notes of Brussels sprouts provide a wonderful contrast to the richness of the pasta and cheese. Shredding them makes them quick to cook and tender.
- Cheesy Cornmeal Drop Biscuits: For another touch of comfort, these savory, cheesy biscuits are excellent for scooping up the creamy sauce.
- Cashew Dill Cucumber Salad: A light, refreshing salad like this one offers a vibrant counterpoint to the warm, hearty casserole. The fresh flavors and crunch are a welcome addition.
- Simple Green Salad with Vinaigrette: A classic choice, a basic green salad dressed with a tangy vinaigrette cuts through the richness of the pasta bake, offering a refreshing element.

- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp salt

- 2 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1 package (around 600 grams) ravioli**
- 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and spray an 11 x 7-inch baking dish with nonstick spray. Add the olive oil to a large pan over medium heat on the stove. Add the onion, then sauté for 4-5 minutes or until it begins to turn translucent. Add the garlic and cook for an additional minute, before adding in the ground pork, oregano, and salt. Cook the sausage until entirely browned and no pink remains, about 6-7 minutes. Break up the meat with a large wooden spoon as you cook it.
- To the same mixture, pour in the pasta sauce and stir to combine. Remove from heat. Spread half of the sausage mixture evenly over the bottom of the prepared baking pan. Sprinkle 1 cup of the shredded mozzarella cheese over the top of the sausage mixture, followed by half of the ravioli from the package (it’s ok if the pasta is not touching each other).
- Repeat the layers one more time, finishing with an extra sprinkle of mozzarella cheese over the top of the last layer of ravioli. Sprinkle the parmesan cheese over the top of the mozzarella. Spray a large piece of aluminum foil with nonstick spray, then place the sprayed side of the foil over the casserole dish, tightly pinching the edges around the dish.
- Bake the casserole in the oven for 35-40 minutes or until bubbling. Remove the foil from the top of the dish, turn the oven to broil, and bake for another 1-2 minutes or until brown and bubbly. Take the casserole dish out of the oven and place on the counter to cool for 10 minutes before serving.
Leftovers, once cooled, can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. The casserole can also be stored in the freezer for up to 2 months. To reheat from frozen, thaw overnight in the fridge, then bake the casserole (covered) for an hour at 350°F (175°C).
Notes

- **For the best flavor harmony with the ground sausage, I highly recommend using cheese-filled ravioli. Sausage-filled ravioli would also be a good choice, but avoid beef-filled varieties to prevent conflicting flavors.
