These exquisite white chocolate filled tuxedo cupcakes are the ultimate indulgence for any special occasion! They flawlessly blend rich dark and creamy white chocolate, featuring a delightful surprise filling.

Welcome to another sweet celebration! Today marks a significant milestone – my blogiversary! It’s truly incredible to think that five years ago, I embarked on this culinary journey, hitting “publish” and sharing my passion for baking with the world. Each year, I love to commemorate this special occasion with a celebratory cake. However, this year, I decided to take a delightful detour and create a cupcake version of one of my absolute favorite desserts: tuxedo cake.
Tuxedo cake holds a special place in my heart, often topping my list of beloved cake flavors. It’s a symphony of textures and tastes, offering multiple layers of pure, unadulterated decadence. For those unfamiliar with this exquisite dessert, a tuxedo cake is essentially a magnificent interplay of chocolate upon chocolate, crowned with a lavish white chocolate element. Typically, it features layers of rich chocolate cake, often enhanced with a velvety chocolate mousse and a luxurious white chocolate ganache. The result is undeniably rich, sophisticated, and utterly unforgettable.
The popular warehouse club, Costco, famously sells a tuxedo cake that is so incredibly delicious, I find myself exercising extreme willpower to resist buying one every time I visit. While I could have easily baked a full-sized cake to mark my blogiversary, the idea of transforming this elaborate dessert into individual, perfectly portioned tuxedo cupcakes was far too appealing to pass up. Not only are cupcakes easier to share and serve at gatherings, but they also offer a charming, personalized touch to a classic treat.

Crafting Your Own Decadent Tuxedo Cupcakes
Creating these irresistible tuxedo cupcakes is a rewarding baking project that starts with the foundation of perfectly moist chocolate cupcakes. You’ll be pleased to know that an electric mixer isn’t strictly necessary for the batter; a whisk and a bit of arm power will do the trick! The key to a smooth, lump-free batter is to meticulously sift your dry ingredients together. This ensures even distribution and a finer texture in your baked goods. Similarly, whisk the wet ingredients thoroughly in a separate bowl until they are well combined and uniform.
Once both mixtures are prepared, gently combine them. Stir until the ingredients are just incorporated; overmixing can lead to tough cupcakes. A crucial step for beautifully domed cupcakes is to fill your liners only halfway. Resist the urge to fill them more, as this will cause the batter to overflow and bake unevenly, losing that perfect cupcake shape.

As your freshly baked chocolate cupcakes cool, it’s the perfect time to prepare the luscious white chocolate ganache. This versatile ganache will serve a dual purpose: a generous filling for the heart of each cupcake, and a key component for the light and fluffy buttercream that will adorn the tops. For the ganache, gently heat some heavy cream until it reaches a gentle simmer, just before boiling. Pour this warm cream directly over your white chocolate chips (or finely chopped white chocolate). The warmth of the cream will begin to melt the chocolate. Allow the mixture to sit undisturbed for a full three minutes; this crucial resting period ensures the chocolate melts evenly. After resting, stir the mixture continuously until it transforms into a smooth, glossy, and utterly irresistible ganache.
To achieve the perfect consistency for both filling and frosting, the ganache can be placed in the refrigerator while the cupcakes finish baking and cooling. Chilling it will allow it to firm up slightly, making it easier to work with and ensuring it holds its shape beautifully within the cupcake and within the buttercream.

Once your cupcakes have completely cooled, it’s time for the exciting step of filling them. Using a small, sharp paring knife, carefully carve out a 1-inch deep “plug” from the center of each cupcake. Be sure to reserve these removed cake pieces, as they will be used later. While I sometimes use a special cupcake coring tool (a thoughtful gift from my husband!), a paring knife works perfectly well and allows for precision. This creates a perfect cavity, ready for its creamy surprise.
After all the middles have been removed, take a piping bag (or a small spoon if you prefer) and generously fill each hole with approximately 2 teaspoons of the prepared white chocolate ganache. This creates a delightful hidden treasure within each cupcake. Gently place the reserved cake “plugs” back on top of the ganache-filled cupcakes. These will act as a cap, sealing in the creamy filling and providing a flat surface for your stunning buttercream frosting.

Creating the Signature White and Dark Chocolate Buttercream
The two-toned frosting is arguably one of the most exciting and visually appealing aspects of these tuxedo cupcakes! It elegantly delivers both the robust dark chocolate and the delicate white chocolate flavors, which are absolutely essential to truly capture the essence of a tuxedo cake. If the thought of piping two different flavors simultaneously feels a little daunting, don’t worry! There are simpler, equally delightful alternatives. You could easily frost the cupcakes in alternating patterns – one with dark chocolate, the next with white chocolate, creating a beautiful contrast on your serving platter. Another charming option is to dollop a bit of both frostings onto each cupcake, artfully swirling them together for a marbled effect. The creative choices are entirely yours to make!
To prepare the rich dark chocolate frosting, begin by whipping softened, room-temperature unsalted butter until it’s light and fluffy. Gradually incorporate good quality cocoa powder, finely sifted powdered sugar, a touch of pure vanilla extract for warmth, and a hint of heavy cream to achieve a smooth and pipeable consistency. For the ethereal white chocolate frosting, you’ll utilize the delightful leftover white chocolate ganache from filling your cupcakes. Combine this ganache with additional sifted powdered sugar and a bit more softened unsalted butter. This creates a light yet rich frosting that perfectly complements the dark chocolate counterpart.

Pro Tip: To minimize cleanup and save time, I typically prepare the white chocolate buttercream first in my mixing bowl. Once that’s done and transferred, I then proceed with making the dark chocolate buttercream in the same bowl, without needing a full wash in between. This trick helps keep your baking process efficient!
After both frostings are prepared to perfection, you can proceed with the artistic step of icing your cupcakes. If you’re keen to try the elegant two-toned piping technique, where both buttercreams emerge from a single piping bag, there are many excellent visual tutorials available online to guide you through the process. Once your cupcakes are beautifully iced, they are ready to be savored and enjoyed!

Storage Tips for Your Tuxedo Cupcakes
Proper storage is key to maintaining the freshness and deliciousness of these tuxedo cupcakes. At room temperature, in a relatively cool environment and sealed in an airtight container, these cupcakes will remain perfectly delightful for 1 to 2 days. However, for extended freshness, I highly recommend storing them in the refrigerator. When stored in an airtight container in the fridge, they will keep exceptionally well for 4 to 5 days, allowing you to enjoy them over a longer period.
If you’re planning ahead or want to make a larger batch, unfrosted cupcakes are excellent candidates for freezing. You can store them in the freezer, sealed tightly in an airtight container, for up to 2 months. For added convenience, you can even fill them with the white chocolate ganache before freezing. When you’re ready to enjoy them, simply transfer the frozen cupcakes to the refrigerator and let them thaw overnight. Once thawed, they’ll be ready for a fresh application of buttercream, tasting as good as freshly baked!
Can I Choose Just One Type of Frosting?
Absolutely! While the two-toned frosting adds to the “tuxedo” theme and offers a fantastic flavor contrast, you are by no means obligated to make both types of buttercream. If your preference leans heavily towards dark chocolate, feel free to double the recipe for the chocolate buttercream. This will provide ample frosting to generously cover all 16 cupcakes with a single, rich flavor profile. Conversely, if you’re a devoted fan of white chocolate and wish for more of that creamy goodness, I suggest increasing the original white chocolate ganache recipe by 1.5 times. Then, for the buttercream, augment the butter by an additional 1/4 cup and the powdered sugar by about an extra cup or so, adjusting to achieve your desired consistency and sweetness. These modifications will ensure you have plenty of your preferred frosting to make your cupcakes perfect for your taste.
Happy blogiversary to me, and happy baking to you!

Description
These scrumptious white chocolate filled tuxedo cupcakes are perfect for any celebration! They’re a combination of dark and white chocolate with a creamy filling!
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup natural cocoa powder
- 3/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 eggs, room temperature
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup brown sugar, lightly packed
- 1/3 cup grapeseed (or vegetable) oil
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup buttermilk, room temperature*
White Chocolate Ganache
- 8 oz chopped white chocolate (or chocolate chips)
- 1/3 cup heavy cream
White Chocolate Buttercream
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1–2 tbsp heavy cream (as needed)
- 1/2 cup white chocolate ganache (from above recipe)
Chocolate Buttercream
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup natural cocoa powder
- 1–2 tbsp heavy cream (as needed)
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line 2 standard-sized muffin pans with 16 paper cupcake liners. Set aside. In a large mixing bowl, carefully sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk to combine thoroughly.
- In another medium-sized bowl, whisk the eggs with both granulated and brown sugars until well combined. Then, whisk in the oil and vanilla extract. Add half of the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and gently stir until just incorporated. Follow by adding half of the buttermilk, stirring gently again. Finally, add the remaining wet ingredients, followed by the remaining buttermilk, and stir until the batter is just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
- Fill the cupcake liners only halfway full. This is a very important step to prevent the cupcakes from overflowing during baking and to ensure a perfect dome. Bake the cupcakes in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove the cupcakes from the oven and allow them to cool in their pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- While the cupcakes are baking and cooling, prepare the white chocolate ganache. Place the white chocolate (chips or chopped) in a heat-safe bowl. Warm the heavy cream either on the stovetop or in the microwave until it is very hot and just before boiling (it should not bubble vigorously). Remove the cream from the heat and pour it directly over the white chocolate. Allow the mixture to sit, undisturbed, for 3 minutes to allow the chocolate to melt. After 3 minutes, stir continuously until the ganache is completely smooth and glossy. Place the ganache in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it, allowing it to firm up slightly.
- Once the cupcakes have fully cooled, use a sharp paring knife to gently remove a 1-inch deep “plug” from the middle of each cupcake. Reserve these removed cake pieces. Using a small spoon or a piping bag, fill each created hole with approximately 2 teaspoons of the chilled white chocolate ganache. You will have some ganache left over, which will be used in the white chocolate buttercream. Gently replace the cake “plug” on top of each filled cupcake.
- Prepare the buttercreams. Begin with the white chocolate buttercream. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or using a handheld electric mixer), beat the softened unsalted butter until it is whipped and smooth, about 30 seconds. Gradually add the powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon of heavy cream, mixing slowly until they begin to combine. Measure 1/2 cup of the remaining white chocolate ganache and add it to the mixing bowl. Turn the mixer to high speed and beat until the buttercream is smooth and fluffy. If the buttercream appears too dry, add the extra tablespoon of cream a little at a time until the desired consistency is achieved.
- Thoroughly scrape out the white chocolate buttercream from the bowl and transfer it to a piping bag or another clean bowl. Now, prepare the chocolate buttercream. In the same mixing bowl (no need for a complete wash if you did the white first), add the softened unsalted butter and mix on high for about 30 seconds until light. Add the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and 1 tablespoon of heavy cream. Mix again, starting on low speed and then increasing to high. Incorporate the pure vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Add the additional tablespoon of cream if needed, mixing on high until the buttercream is whipped, smooth, and easily spreadable or pipeable.
- Frost the tops of the cupcakes. You can alternate between the two different buttercreams for each cupcake, or try a stunning two-toned approach using a piping bag, as described in the blog post above for a more detailed visual guide. Serve the tuxedo cupcakes immediately for the best experience, or store them in a sealed container at room temperature for 1-2 days. They will keep for 4-5 days when stored in the refrigerator.
Unfrosted cupcakes can be frozen in an airtight container for up to 2 months; simply thaw them overnight in the refrigerator before frosting.
Notes
*You can easily make your own buttermilk by combining 1 teaspoon of vinegar or lemon juice with whole milk and whisking it together. Let it sit for 10 minutes until it thickens slightly before using it in the recipe.
