A Delicious Instant Pot Apple Butter Recipe

Traditional apple butter can take hours of slow cooking to develop a deep, caramelized flavor. Using an Instant Pot shortens that time significantly without sacrificing depth or warmth. This recipe yields a silky, cinnamon-scented apple butter in under an hour, and it freezes well for up to six months so you can enjoy the taste of fall any time.

What’s the Difference Between Applesauce and Apple Butter?

Apple butter and applesauce start similarly—cooked apples—but apple butter is cooked longer and reduced until the natural sugars caramelize and the mixture becomes richly flavored and deeply colored. Applesauce may be plain or lightly spiced; apple butter is typically concentrated and seasoned with warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.

Should You Leave the Apple Peel On?

You can leave the peel on, which speeds prep and adds fiber and color, provided your apples are unwaxed. If using waxed conventional apples, peel them or remove the wax before using. As always, wash apples thoroughly before preparing.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Apples: About 5 pounds, cored and cut into wedges. Sweet varieties like Fuji, Gala, Pink Lady, or Golden Delicious work especially well.
  • Lemon juice: A tablespoon for brightness and balance.
  • Brown sugar: Pack it into the measuring cup for accuracy.
  • Granulated sugar: You can swap in raw or natural sugar if preferred.
  • Apple cider: Provides the liquid needed for pressure cooking (not apple cider vinegar). Pure apple juice can be used if needed.
  • Ground cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg: Warm spices that define apple butter.
  • Pure vanilla extract: A tablespoon for rounded flavor.

How to Make Apple Butter In The Instant Pot

  1. Pressure cook the apples: Place apples in the Instant Pot. Stir in lemon juice, brown sugar, granulated sugar, apple cider, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and vanilla. Secure the lid and set to Pressure Cook on HIGH for 8 minutes. Allow a natural pressure release for 15 minutes when cooking ends.
  2. Blend until smooth: Remove the lid and puree the cooked apples with an immersion blender until smooth. Alternatively, blend in batches in a food processor or high-powered blender, then return the puree to the Instant Pot.
  3. Reduce to thicken: Set the Instant Pot to Sauté on the LOW/LESS setting. Bring the puree to a gentle simmer and cook 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it reaches a thick, spreadable consistency and a deep golden-brown color. Let cool before storing.

What Is Apple Butter Used For?

  • Breakfast and snacks: Spread on toast, biscuits, scones, English muffins, pancakes, or stirred into yogurt or oatmeal.
  • Charcuterie and cheese boards: Its sweet-tart complexity pairs beautifully with cheeses, cured meats, and crackers.
  • Cooking and baking: Substitute apple butter for applesauce in many baked goods, or use it to add depth to sauces, marinades, and glazes.

Choosing Apples

For apple butter, sweeter apples often yield a more caramelized, mellow result because their natural sugars enhance browning. Try sweet and flavorful varieties like Fuji, Gala, Pink Lady, or Golden Delicious. If you prefer a touch of tartness, blend in a firmer apple like Granny Smith.
