Easy Salmon Spinach Quiche: A Pantry Staple for Any Meal
In times when pantry staples are paramount, discovering versatile and nutritious ingredients is a game-changer. Canned salmon stands out as an unsung hero, offering convenience, affordability, and a powerful nutritional punch. This Salmon Spinach Quiche recipe harnesses the simplicity of canned salmon to create a delectable dish that’s perfect for a quick lunch, an elegant brunch, or a satisfying weeknight dinner. And for those busy days, a store-bought pie crust makes this meal even faster to prepare, ensuring a delicious, homemade taste with minimal effort.
The Power of Canned Salmon: Your Pantry’s Best Friend
Like many, a recent pantry audit confirmed the importance of well-stocked shelves. Flour, diced tomatoes, beans, lentils, and rice were among my go-to items. But few ingredients rival the utility and nutritional value of canned salmon. Imagine my delight when a generous case of Gold Seal Wild Pink Salmon arrived for recipe testing, perfectly timed for highlighting its benefits during periods of social isolation.
Canned salmon is an incredibly versatile ingredient, boasting a long shelf life, making it an ideal choice for emergency preparedness and everyday cooking. It’s packed with Omega-3 fatty acids, essential for heart and brain health, and provides a significant source of lean protein. Beyond this flavorful quiche, canned salmon can be transformed into crispy salmon patties, savory quesadillas, refreshing salads, and so much more. Its ready-to-use nature saves precious cooking time, allowing you to whip up wholesome meals without the fuss of fresh fish preparation.
Understanding Quiche: A Culinary Delight
Often confused with its crustless cousin, the frittata, a quiche is fundamentally a savory tart featuring a rich, creamy custard filling baked in a flaky pie crust. While frittatas offer a lighter, open-faced alternative, the distinct pastry base is what truly defines a quiche, providing a delightful textural contrast to the soft, egg-based filling. Originating from France, quiche has evolved into a global comfort food, adaptable to countless ingredient combinations.
This particular Salmon Spinach Quiche marries the rich flavors of a whole can of premium salmon with vibrant, fresh spinach, creamy half-and-half, and a generous amount of melted mozzarella cheese. The result is a robust, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying dish. While I enjoy making my own pie crust for that extra touch of homemade goodness, a good quality store-bought crust works beautifully, cutting down prep time significantly without compromising on taste.
Crafting Your Salmon Spinach Quiche: A Step-by-Step Guide
Preparing this salmon and spinach quiche is a remarkably straightforward process, especially when utilizing a pre-made pie crust. The active preparation time is minimal, with the majority of the cooking being hands-off as it bakes to golden perfection in your oven. This allows you to effortlessly prepare a complementary side dish or simply unwind as the enticing aromas fill your kitchen.
Prepping for Perfection
- Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). Prepare your pie plate by lightly greasing it with butter or non-stick cooking spray, then carefully press your chosen pie crust (homemade or store-bought) into the dish. To prevent the crust from puffing up, gently prick the bottom with a fork a few times.
- Next, in a skillet set over medium heat, warm a tablespoon of olive oil for about one minute. Add the diced yellow onion and sauté for 3-5 minutes until it becomes beautifully translucent. Introduce the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, releasing its aromatic fragrance. Finally, add the fresh spinach, stirring gently until it just begins to wilt. Remove the skillet from the heat and set aside.
Assembling the Rich Filling
- Sprinkle about ¼ cup of shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the bottom of your prepared pie crust. This initial layer adds a delightful cheesy barrier and helps prevent a soggy crust.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the three large eggs with the 1 ½ cups of half-and-half cream until well combined and smooth. This forms the creamy base of your quiche.
- Now, carefully fold in the star ingredients: the drained canned salmon (gently flaked), the sautéed spinach and onion mixture, the remaining 1 ¾ cups of mozzarella cheese, a pinch of red pepper flakes for a subtle kick, and a generous seasoning of salt and pepper. Stir everything together until evenly distributed.
- Pour this luscious mixture into the pie crust, spreading it out evenly. Place the pie plate into your preheated oven.
Baking to Golden Perfection

Bake the quiche for 50-55 minutes, or until the center is set and no longer jiggles when you give the pie plate a gentle shake. The crust should be golden brown. If you notice the edges of the crust browning too quickly, simply cover them loosely with aluminum foil or use a pie crust protector to prevent over-browning.
Once baked, remove the quiche from the oven and allow it to rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing and serving. This resting period is crucial as it allows the custard to fully set, ensuring clean, beautiful slices. Garnish with a sprinkle of fresh dill for an extra burst of flavor and freshness.
Perfect Pairings: What to Serve with Your Quiche
A versatile dish like salmon spinach quiche pairs beautifully with a variety of sides, making it suitable for any mealtime. For a light and refreshing complement, a simple crisp green salad with a zesty vinaigrette is always a fantastic choice. The freshness of the greens cuts through the richness of the quiche, creating a balanced meal.
Another excellent option is a comforting bowl of soup. Here are a few ideas from my blog that would pair wonderfully:
- Creamy Roasted Tomato Basil Soup: Its sweet and tangy notes offer a perfect contrast.
- Simple Kale Salad: A robust salad that stands up well to the quiche’s flavors.
- Crockpot Minestrone Soup: A hearty soup that turns the meal into a satisfying feast.
For a brunch spread, consider serving your quiche alongside fresh fruit platters, crispy bacon or sausage, or even a light yogurt parfait. If enjoyed for dinner, a simple steamed vegetable or roasted asparagus would be ideal. Don’t forget a warm, crusty bread to soak up any delicious juices!
Storage and Make-Ahead Tips
One of the best qualities of this salmon spinach quiche is how well it keeps. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, making it an excellent option for meal prepping healthy lunches throughout the week. To reheat, simply warm slices in the microwave or oven until heated through.
Quiche is also freezer-friendly! To freeze, allow the baked quiche to cool completely. You can then wrap individual slices or the entire quiche (if unfrozen before baking, you can bake from frozen, increasing cooking time) tightly in plastic wrap and then in aluminum foil. It will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Frequently Asked Questions About Salmon Spinach Quiche
Can I use fresh salmon instead of canned?
Absolutely! If you prefer fresh salmon, simply cook and flake about 6-8 ounces of salmon fillet before adding it to the quiche mixture. Ensure it’s fully cooled before incorporating.
Can I make this quiche dairy-free?
Yes, with a few substitutions. You can use dairy-free cream cheese or vegan shreds in place of mozzarella, and a plant-based milk alternative (like unsweetened almond or soy milk) mixed with a tablespoon of cornstarch can replace the half-and-half cream for a similar consistency.
What other vegetables can I add?
This quiche is very adaptable. Feel free to add sautéed mushrooms, bell peppers, chopped asparagus, or sun-dried tomatoes. Ensure any additional vegetables are cooked and drained of excess moisture before adding them to the filling.
Can I prepare the quiche ahead of time?
Yes, you can prepare the quiche mixture (excluding the crust) a day in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Assemble and bake just before serving. You can also bake the entire quiche and simply reheat it when ready to serve.
Why did my quiche turn out watery?
A watery quiche can often be due to vegetables with high moisture content not being properly drained or cooked down. Ensure your spinach and any other added vegetables are thoroughly wilted and their excess liquid is removed before adding to the egg mixture.
