Chapter Eight: Genesis

the first year

Celebrating One Year: A Journey Through Food, Blogging, and Life

It’s truly hard to believe that an entire year has passed since I first launched this little corner of the internet, my beloved food blog. What began as a mere daydream, a quiet aspiration to share the myriad recipe ideas constantly bubbling in my mind, has blossomed into an integral part of my life, profoundly shaping my identity. For years, I found immense joy in following other food bloggers, meticulously exploring their recipes, and peeking into the lives of the talented individuals behind those captivating culinary narratives. The thought of cultivating my own space, a platform to share my kitchen adventures and personal reflections, felt both thrilling and daunting. Taking that monumental leap, however, has proven to be one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made, and I’m incredibly grateful for every moment of this incredible journey.

This past year has been a vibrant tapestry woven with moments of exhilarating triumph and unexpected challenge. Each experience, whether a perfectly executed recipe or a baffling technical glitch, has contributed to an invaluable learning curve that I wouldn’t trade for anything. Reflecting on these facets of my first year helps to truly appreciate the growth and evolution this blog has undergone.

The Unseen World of Blogging: Triumphs and Challenges

Navigating the Digital Labyrinth: Technology and SEO

Venturing into the world of blogging, particularly establishing a website from scratch, has been an overwhelmingly profound learning experience. Suddenly, I found myself immersed in a lexicon of terms like “coding,” “plugins,” and the ever-elusive “SEO.” My previous interactions with computers and the internet, though frequent, had always been superficial. I had no genuine grasp of the intricate layers and complex mechanics that power the sleek, user-friendly websites I frequented daily. The sheer depth of knowledge required to build and maintain an effective online presence was, frankly, a shock.

Just as I begin to feel a flicker of confidence in managing the day-to-day operations of my site, an unforeseen update rolls out, or I inadvertently click on an unfamiliar setting, plunging my carefully constructed digital world into what often feels like utter catastrophe. These moments typically lead to hours, sometimes even days, spent meticulously sifting through countless online forums and tutorials, desperately trying to diagnose and resolve the issue. During these frantic problem-solving sessions, a sense of impostor syndrome frequently creeps in. I often feel as though I’ve stumbled and guessed my way through much of the initial setup and ongoing maintenance of this blog. There are countless visual and functional improvements I envision for the site, yet the daunting question of “how” or “where to even begin” often leaves me feeling paralyzed. The truth is, time and resources are two precious commodities that any blogger, especially a new one, constantly yearns for in greater abundance.

Another significant, albeit often frustrating, aspect of the blogging world that I simply cannot ignore is social media. Ah, social media! Before embarking on this blogging adventure, I was the quintessential bystander, barely maintaining an active Facebook profile. I’ve never been one to embrace social media platforms wholeheartedly, yet for food blogging, it has undeniably proven itself to be a necessary evil. Despite my initial reservations, I have genuinely grown to appreciate and even love Instagram. Its visual nature makes it incredibly fun and intuitive to use, and I can honestly say it has been instrumental in forging real, meaningful connections with fellow food enthusiasts and bloggers. However, platforms like Twitter remain an enigma to me, and even Facebook, with its ever-changing algorithms and engagement strategies, still feels like a giant mystery. The biggest challenge, of course, is finding the time to effectively manage and create content for all these diverse platforms simultaneously.

Building Bridges: The Power of Community and Relationships

One of the most delightful and unexpected outcomes of starting this blog has been the incredible connections I’ve forged with fellow bloggers. The camaraderie within the food blogging community is truly remarkable. I absolutely cherish reading the thoughtful comments from my friends and find immense joy in reciprocating on their posts. It’s truly amazing how genuine and deep online relationships can become, making you feel as if you know someone intimately, despite geographical distances. The unwavering support, encouragement, and love from this wonderful group of people have been an absolute bedrock throughout my first year – you all know who you are, and I am eternally grateful!

Beyond the emotional support, the posts from my food blogging friends serve as an inexhaustible source of culinary inspiration. Not only do they spark fresh ideas for my own recipe creations and blog content, but I often find myself trying their innovative recipes and discovering fantastic new ideas for dinner, breakfast, or even a quick snack, without having to search far and wide. This collaborative spirit, where creativity and passion are shared freely, enriches not just my own blogging journey but also my everyday kitchen experiences. It’s a beautiful ecosystem of shared passion and mutual upliftment that has made this journey so much more vibrant.

The Delicate Dance: Finding Balance in a Busy Life

When I speak of balance, I’m referring to a deeply personal struggle: the demanding juggle of running a bustling household, providing full-time care for my two energetic young boys, and diligently managing the daily intricacies of my blog. And, as if that weren’t enough, navigating the challenges of pregnancy on top of it all! It is, without a doubt, anything but easy. My respect for those multi-talented bloggers who successfully manage careers, motherhood, and a thriving food blog knows no bounds. I often wonder, truly, how they do it all?

A significant portion, approximately 90%, of my evenings are dedicated to blog-related tasks: writing new posts, engaging with other bloggers’ content, preparing food for recipes, meticulously editing photos, and brainstorming fresh recipe ideas. A major challenge arises from the fact that most of my food photography sessions regrettably occur at night, depriving me of that glorious, natural sunlight that every food photographer dreams of. I am endlessly thankful for my trusty tabletop fluorescent light, which has become an indispensable tool. With the exception of one precious day each week when my in-laws graciously take the boys, I have virtually zero dedicated time during the day to work on the blog, especially since my oldest son has outgrown his afternoon naps.

Weekends offer a small window where I can prepare food for the blog while my husband, Etienne, is home. However, these sessions are often rushed as the dishes I create frequently double as our family meals for the day. I simply cannot bear to waste food, so we conscientiously consume everything I make, with any surplus often shared with friends or family. This constant race against time often leaves me feeling disheartened by my photographs or the limited opportunity I have to truly style the food with the care it deserves. I envision photos that could be so much more captivating and genuinely wonderful if only I had ample time to practice various techniques, experiment with different props, and perhaps even delve into creating video content.

I often daydream about a future where my children are all in school, granting me endless hours to harness that beautiful morning sunlight, and allowing me to photograph food without the constant soundtrack of “Mama!” or the sudden eruption of utter chaos just beyond the kitchen door. These aspirations, while lovely, necessitate frequent reality checks. I have learned the importance of consciously lowering my expectations for what I can realistically achieve within my current personal constraints and, crucially, to stop the insidious habit of comparing my journey to those of others who may have vastly different circumstances. One day, I truly believe, I will have more dedicated time to fully immerse myself in this passion project of mine.

Looking Forward: Aspirations and the Road Ahead

Defining Success: Goals for the Future

As I ponder what I hope to achieve with this blog in the long term, a key aspiration is to one day generate sufficient income from it to justify investing more time, energy, and financial resources back into its growth. While I don’t harbor ambitions of becoming a “top blogger” – nor do I believe that’s truly what I desire – I do hope to achieve a meaningful degree of success. Ultimately, success is a deeply personal metric, isn’t it? For me, it encompasses not just financial viability but also profound personal fulfillment and the continued joy of connecting with my audience.

I would be absolutely thrilled to see a few more of my pins go viral, or to significantly expand my following on some of those social media platforms I sometimes lament! Hopefully, this blog can evolve beyond being solely a cherished hobby, transforming into something more substantial and impactful. But even if it remains primarily a hobby, for now, it stands as my absolute favorite way to spend my “me” time, a creative outlet where my mind is never truly far from its exciting possibilities. The mental energy and passion I pour into it are a testament to how much it means to me.

With the exciting arrival of a new baby just a few months away, I am certain that I will need to temporarily slow down the pace of my blogging. This is a natural and expected phase, and I’m prepared to embrace it fully. However, I have every confidence that I will eventually find my rhythm again and dive back into the groove with renewed energy and enthusiasm. This pause will be a period of adaptation, but certainly not an end to this cherished pursuit.

Gratitude and the Next Chapter

To each and every one of you who has read, commented, followed along, and offered your incredible support over this past year – a heartfelt and enormous THANK YOU. There is truly nothing more rewarding than hearing from someone who has tried one of my recipes and enjoyed it; those messages are the fuel that keeps this passion burning bright. Your engagement makes every late night and every technical challenge worthwhile.

Here’s to another fantastic year filled with continuous learning, personal growth, deeper community connections, and, most deliciously, plenty of new culinary adventures and eating experiences. The journey continues, and I am so excited to see where it leads us next.
