Baby-Friendly Banana Muffins: A Wholesome & Delicious Treat
*Recipe Update: February 2019* This beloved recipe has been enhanced with the addition of unsweetened applesauce, which boosts moisture and natural sweetness. While the core recipe remains unchanged, feel free to include or omit the applesauce based on your preference. This thoughtful update ensures even softer, more delightful muffins every time.
Mother’s Day has passed, and I must say, it was a truly wonderful day. My husband, Etienne, went above and beyond, allowing me to sleep in and preparing breakfast for me, complete with an adorable handmade card from our tiny loves, featuring their precious footprints and handprints. He even surprised me with a gift card to Zest Kitchenware, a charming little kitchen store I had recently discovered and couldn’t stop raving about.
The rest of the day was spent with my amazing Mom. Of course, no day is ever perfectly smooth, and our youngest, Wally, decided to vocalize his displeasure (read: scream) for the majority of the 1 hour and 20-minute drive. Such is the beautiful chaos of family life, right? Despite the minor travel hiccup, it was a day filled with love and gratitude.
I sincerely hope your weekend was fantastic, whether you celebrated Mother’s Day or not. Can you believe we’re already in the middle of May? Time truly flies, especially when you’re busy creating delicious, healthy treats for your family!
If you’ve been following my culinary adventures, you’ll know I have a particular fondness for raspberries, especially when incorporated into baked goods. Have you had a chance to try my healthier raspberry chocolate chip banana bread yet? Today, I’m sharing another delightful recipe that pairs the natural sweetness of ripe bananas with the tart burst of raspberries, but this time, it’s crafted specifically with babies, toddlers, and sugar-conscious individuals in mind. These muffins contain absolutely NO added sugar – how incredible is that?
The secret to their perfect sweetness lies in the bananas themselves. Alongside a touch of unsweetened applesauce, ultra-ripe bananas provide all the necessary flavor. We’re talking about bananas that are almost entirely brown, soft to the touch, and perhaps even attracting a few fruit flies (they truly are that sweet!). While they might be a bit challenging to peel and handle, their intense natural sugar content is exactly what makes these muffins so delicious without any refined sugar.

The Perfect Texture: Balancing Health and Taste
While these little banana delights are sugar-free, they do contain a small amount of healthy fats to ensure a wonderfully soft and moist texture. I’ve found that a touch of avocado oil, combined with Greek yogurt, works wonders. I experimented extensively, even attempting to replace all the oil with applesauce. While the flavor remained good, the texture became a bit too rubbery for my liking. The avocado oil and Greek yogurt are essential for that light, fluffy, and tender crumb that both my boys (and I!) absolutely adore.
For this batch, I opted for vibrant raspberries, but these muffins are incredibly versatile. You can easily swap them for other berries like blueberries (as seen in some of my other recipes), blackberries, or diced strawberries. If you prefer, you can even leave the fruit out entirely. As I mentioned, raspberries hold a special place in my heart when it comes to baking. Their delightful tartness adds an extra layer of flavor that beautifully complements the natural sweetness of the bananas, creating a truly balanced taste experience. I used up the last of my frozen raspberries for the batch pictured below, and I love how they “exploded” with juice, adding a dramatic, colorful swirl to each muffin!

Whip Up a Batch in No Time!
One of the best things about these muffins is how quickly they come together, making them perfect for busy mornings or impromptu snack cravings. The process is straightforward: simply whisk all your dry ingredients in one bowl, then mash the ripe bananas in a separate bowl and combine them with the yogurt, egg, oil, and vanilla extract. The mini muffins bake up in a mere 12-14 minutes, while standard-sized muffins are ready in about 22-25 minutes. You’ll be enjoying warm, wholesome muffins in under an hour!

Perfect for Every Age: Baby-Led Weaning to Adult Snacking
These baby banana muffins are an excellent choice for a nutritious breakfast or an easy snack, perfectly sized for little hands. If you’re exploring baby-led weaning, these soft, naturally sweet muffins are a fantastic option for introducing solids. For older kids and adults seeking a healthier muffin alternative, the larger sized muffins are equally satisfying and guilt-free.
So, the next time you find yourself with an abundance of ripe bananas, resist the urge to discard them! Instead, let them ripen even further until they’re almost black – trust me, it’s worth the wait for the unparalleled sweetness they impart. Don’t hesitate to experiment with different mix-ins; these muffins are incredibly adaptable. I have a strong feeling that this recipe will quickly become your new go-to for kid-friendly, naturally sweetened muffins that the whole family will love!

Baby-and-Me Banana Muffins
Rated 5 out of 5 stars from 2 reviews
- Author: Katherine
- Total Time: 35 minutes
- Yield: 6-24 muffins
Description
100% naturally sweetened baby banana muffins. Make them mini for your wee ones’ breakfast or snack, or make them bigger for you! The perfect baby-led weaning muffin.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 2 very ripe, large bananas
- 2 tbsp avocado or vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup Greek yogurt, room temperature
- 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce, room temperature
- 1 egg, lightly beaten, room temperature
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup raspberries* (fresh or frozen)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 F (175 C) and spray or line a mini or standard-sized muffin pan with muffin liners. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together both flours, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.
- In a medium-sized bowl, mash the very ripe bananas until no large lumps remain. Stir in the oil, Greek yogurt, and applesauce until fully incorporated. Whisk in the lightly beaten egg and vanilla extract.
- Carefully add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix the batter; a few lumps are perfectly fine. If using, gently fold in the raspberries.
- Divide the batter evenly among the muffin pan wells: this recipe yields about 24 mini muffins or 6 standard-sized muffins. Bake for 12-14 minutes for mini muffins, or 22-25 minutes for standard-sized muffins, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the muffins to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Muffins will stay fresh at room temperature in a sealed container for up to 1 week. These muffins also freeze exceptionally well for up to 2 months.
Notes
- Feel free to replace raspberries with any other desired mix-ins. Great alternatives include blueberries, blackberries, diced strawberries, raisins, or even chocolate chips for an adult-friendly treat. Both fresh and frozen fruit will work beautifully; if using frozen fruit, there’s no need to thaw it first.
- *Recipe updated February 2019* The addition of unsweetened applesauce was made to enhance the moisture and natural sweetness of the muffins. The original recipe is otherwise the same. You can choose to include or omit the applesauce.
